SCHOLARSHIP
A Kappa Sigma strives to excel academically, which is, above all else, why we are at the University of Washington.
STUDY CHECKS
To help achieve the best grades possible, brothers must complete a minimum amount of study hours per week.
A pledge is required to do at least 6 official hours of studying.
A member not in their major must do at least 4 hours,
Finally, someone who is in their major is only required 2 hours of studying, but this is because we expect they have learned sufficient study habits.
Members must complete the above hours at either the library or in their rooms during designated study time.
Should a member not meet their required study hours, they are fined $5, which doubles each consecutive week thereafter.
This program has proven effective with freshmen members who are not yet adapted to the college environment. In the dorms, many students get caught up in their newfound scholastic freedom, but our study program helps act as a transition into more independent study styles.
STRENGTH IN BROTHERS
In addition, members who may be struggling in a particular class are frequently tutored by older members. With many members taking similar classes, our bond of brotherhood extends beyond the fraternity house and into the classroom.
Our house minimum GPA is 2.7.
When a member falls under this GPA they are put on one of three levels of Academic Probation, starting at Level 1 for the first instance, Level 2 for the second consecutive instance, and Level 3 for the third consecutive instance. Each level includes its own stipulations, increasing with each level, designed to aid the affected member in his scholastic endeavors.
Our house GPA reflects upon all of us and members have lost their membership with our order for poor academic performance. We take scholastic achievement very seriously.
SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
A reward of $250 goes to the top GPA of each class (Freshmen, Sophomores, etc;). The competition for the top grades each quarter is a newly added incentive, which is helping drive competition among brothers.
HOW WE STACK UP
Last quarter (Spring 2009), 7 of our members achieved Dean's List status rewarded to those who receive at least a 3.5 GPA for either the Autumn, Winter, or Spring quarters while being a full-time student at the UW.
FINAL THOUGHTS
-Our brotherhood has many advantages inside and outside the classroom.
-We strive to teach new pledges the study techniques necessary to excel in the college environment.
-Membership in Kappa Sigma is a privilege, which may be taken away for poor scholastic performance.
